Marriage in Croatia for foreign nationals

Getting married in Croatia as a foreigner: documents and certified translations

Foreign nationals can marry before a Croatian registrar, but the exact checklist should be confirmed with the registry office for the intended wedding location before documents are issued or translated. Country of issue, previous marital status and knowledge of Croatian determine whether Apostille, additional evidence or a court interpreter is needed.

Quotes usually sent within 30 minutes during business hours · same-day delivery depends on scope and availability.

Check before ordering

Four circumstances determine what you need.

Do not issue, authenticate or translate documents from a generic online list. First tell the registry office your citizenship, country of issue, previous marriages and whether you understand Croatian.

Correct sequence

From the registrar’s instruction to a complete certified translation.

Requirements are not identical for every couple. This sequence reduces the risk of a record expiring or being translated before required authentication.

  1. 01

Choose the wedding location and registry office

The office for the intended place of marriage is competent. Tell it each party’s citizenship, residence and previous marital status.

  2. 02

    Obtain the exact document checklist

The usual core set is a birth record, certificate of single status, confirmation that no impediment exists and that the marriage will be recognised at home, photo identification and passport.

  3. 03

    Check document age

Croatian civil-register instructions generally require personal-status records issued within the previous three months unless the record itself states another validity period.

  4. 04

    Establish the authentication regime

Covered documents within the EU need no Apostille. For other records, check a treaty exemption, Apostille or full legalisation.

  5. 05

Arrange a court interpreter if needed

If either party does not understand Croatian, confirm with the registrar when an interpreter must attend and whether the proposed appointment is feasible.

  6. 06

    Translate the final, complete set

Complete authentication before translation and send every page, reverse side, seal and attachment. We prepare the translation against the confirmed recipient requirement.

Documents for the registrar

One review of the complete set before quotation.

  1. 01

    Send records and instructions

Attach legible scans, the registrar’s checklist, country of issue, intended wedding date and required number of copies.

  2. 02

    Confirm scope, price and deadline

We check visible authentication, page count and whether the Apostille must be included. Interpreter attendance is quoted and confirmed separately.

  3. 03

    Receive a filing-ready translation

You receive the agreed certified translation. Same-day delivery may be available for shorter records, subject to language, scope and availability.

Terminology varies by country. These may evidence capacity to marry, absence of an impediment or the content of foreign law. The Croatian registrar determines which certificate is acceptable; send the exact title and content before ordering translation.

11How is the translation price calculated?

Each price is determined individually after the document has been reviewed, taking account of the language pair, volume and type of text, certification, deadline and any other requirements. A certified-translation quote may be based on Croatia’s Ordinance on Permanent Court Interpreters. The Ordinance calculates written translations by a standard line of 50 characters, with one standard page of 30 lines—or 1,500 characters—as the minimum unit.
